Israeli criminals must be prosecuted for their war crimes in Gaza

As rightly pointed out by Professor George Bisharat (Israel on Trial, the N.Y. Times, op/ed, April 4, 2009) the stature of international law is diminished when a nation violates it with impunity. For years, Israel has been guilty of violating international laws, and yet, our own U.S. government either condoned such crimes or chose to close its eyes. Unfortunately, such an attitude has only emboldened the Israeli hardliners into tightening ever harder the screws for inhuman suffocation of the Palestinian people that live under occupation. Truly, in recent months what the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did in the Gaza (often termed the “most despicable place on earth”) from willful murder of unarmed civilians to destruction of the entire infrastructure is nothing short of war crimes.

It is high time that the Obama Administration tries to reclaim the moral higher ground through its actions that speak loud and clear that America condemns all such atrocities and won’t tolerate any repeat of such crimes in the future. Israeli political and military personnel who planned, ordered or executed those offenses should face criminal prosecution.
